Eric Satie, a young French musician who moved in Montmartre, a meeting-place for Radical Artists and Poets, is looking for new musical patterns, and has invented his own method of composition: numerous brief phrases in musical sequence which seem arbitrary (true in a complex formal rationale). A year later (about 1893–94) Sati created a “Displeasure,” consisting of one single sheet of music, to be played 840 times in a row. Sati was the author of the drama “Vexations” (“Dissatisfaction”). Only 70 years later in 1963 John Cage met this limitation for the first time.

…Sati was therefore the first composer, before its radical expressions in futuristic and Dadaist performances, to develop the foundations of musical avant-garde.

A symphonic poem “Prelude to a Faun’s Afternoon” and his subsequently produced works begins with the musical modernity. Debussy leaves the ordinary usage of the orchestra to create a majestic, rich sound. It is used as a collection of carefully thought-out instrument groupings with sound textures. In a flute, viola and harp ensemble, for example, the principal sound is distinct yet the timbres are extremely similar in their overtones. For the first time, Debussy focuses on the stamps palette, which becomes a separate, very significant, classified and ordered component of the work.
